Gorizia è un comune italiano di 33 789 abitanti della regione a statuto speciale del Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Già capoluogo dell'omonima provincia, dal 1º luglio 2020 è sede dell'omonimo ente di decentramento regionale .
La città forma un'area urbana integrata anche amministrativamente con i comuni sloveni di Nova Gorica e di San Pietro-Vertoiba. Il territorio della città slovena di Nova Gorica, anch'essa situata lungo il fiume Isonzo, fu parte integrante del comune di Gorizia fino al 1947, quando l'Istria e gran parte della Venezia Giulia vennero cedute alla Jugoslavia in seguito al trattato di Parigi. Per la sua posizione e per la sua storia, Gorizia è uno dei punti di congiunzione fra le culture romanze, slave e germaniche. Come il resto del Goriziano, la città rientra sia nei confini del Friuli sia in quelli della Venezia Giulia.
