Rietmolen è un villaggio del comune di Berkelland, al confine tra l'Achterhoek di Gheldria e Twente. Culturalmente, il luogo è legato ai comuni cattolici a nord, in Overijssel, in particolare Haaksbergen, mentre amministrativamente fa parte di Gheldria. La vicina Neede, a causa degli sviluppi nella Guerra degli Ottant'anni, subì una forte influenza calvinista intorno all'anno 1600. Dopo la conquista della Signoria di Borculo da parte di Maurits van Oranje, a Neede era permessa solo la fede riformata nederduits.
