Poolreiziger Adrien de Gerlache ontwierp deze driemaster die in Schotland gebouwd werd. De Mercator kende slechts twee commandanten en maakte 54 reizen. In 1936 haalde de Mercator het stoffelijk overschot van Pater Damiaan terug. In 1960 liep de Mercator de haven van Antwerpen binnen. In 1961 werd het ingericht als museumschip. Sinds 1964 is de Mercator een parel aan de kroon van Oostende. Na grondige renovatiewerken die anderhalf jaar duurden is het schip sinds 01 april 2017 eigendom van de Stad Oostende en behoort van nu tot het maritiem erfgoed van de Stad.
