De scheepslift van Strépy-Thieu is een parel van technologie, industriële archeologie en architectuur.
Het scheelde niet veel of deze parel zou afgebroken worden in de jaren '60. De oude liften en dit deel van het kanaal is nu gelukkig een beschermd monument en werd op 2 december 1998 door Unesco als werelderfgoed erkend.
