De rivier ontspringt in de plaats Honsfeld in de gemeente B³llingen, op 640m boven de zeespiegel. Het bekken is gelegen in de Hoge Ardennen. Baraque Michel is met 674 meter ÚÚn van de hoogste punten van BelgiÙ en vormt een deel van de waterscheiding van het bekken van de AmblÞve. De monding van de AmblÞve nabij Comblain-au-Pont is daarentegen op slechts 120 meter gelegen. De AmblÞve heeft hierdoor een erg hoog verhang.
De vallei van de AmblÞve is vooral erg smal. Nabij Fond de Quareux is de vallei het smalst, terwijl de vallei nabij het dorpje Cheneux relatief breed is. De vallei is ÚÚn van de mooiste gebieden in de Hoge Ardennen.
