As is een plaats en gemeente in de Belgische provincie Limburg en behoort tot het gerechtelijk kanton Bree en het kieskanton Genk. De gemeente telt zo'n 8000 inwoners, die Assenaren worden genoemd. In 1901 werd in As de eerste Limburgse steenkool gevonden door André Dumont. Hiermee begon de industrialisatie waarmee vooral de omliggende gemeenten hun voordeel deden. Tegenwoordig is As een residentieel dorp te midden van heidevelden en bosgebieden op de grens van Kempen en Maasland.
