Van 1923 tot 1992 ontgon men in de mijn van Zolder steenkool. Het was hier dat op 30 september 1992 de laatste steenkoolmijn van de Benelux definitief de deuren sloot. De komst van vele buitenlandse werkkrachten in de mijn gaf de gemeente op korte tijd een multiculturele bevolking.
Toeristisch is het racecircuit van Zolder hÚt uithangbord van de gemeente.
In de gemeente kan men enkele kastelen bezichtigen zoals: het kasteel Vogelsanck en het kasteel Meylandt.
Verder ligt het Vijvergebied Midden-Limburg voor een deel in de gemeente.
