De gebouwen van het Sint-Jozefinstituut hebben een lange
voorgeschiedenis. Vanaf 1820 groeide het begijnhof uit tot een
onderwijscentrum. De begijnen richtten er een huishoudschool op
voor arme meisjes. In 1835 kwamen de lekenonderwijzeressen Maria Theresia en Jeannette Van Heteren zich op het begijnhof vestigen. De school werd in 1850 omgevormd tot een gemeentelijke lagere meisjesschool. De lessen werden gegeven in twee begijnenhuisjes aan de westzijde van het begijnhof. Maria Theresia Van Heteren was er schoolhoofd. In 1848 werd gestart met de Normaalschool. Bijna alle begijnenhuisjes langs de Burchtstraat werden hiervoor gebruikt. Geleidelijk groeide het aantal leerlingen. Een nieuw schoolgebouw werd in gebruik genomen in 1904. Door een uitbreiding in 1914 kreeg de school haar huidige omvang.
