In de bossen links zie je een open zandige plek. Hechtel was ten tijde van WO1 vrijwel onbebost en omgeven door een open duinenlandschap. De eerste grootschalige bosaanplantingen in deze streek dateren trouwens van vlak voor WO1. Het domeinbos Pijnven (noordelijk van hier gelegen) is in 1904 aangeplant.
