In het centrum van Herne trekt de kerktoren opgetrokken uit massieve steenblokken de aandacht. Het is de Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk. Het huidige gebouw heeft een middenschip en beuk in Romaanse stijl, en een koor en toren uitgevoerd in Brabantse Scheldegotiek. Typisch voor deze stijl zijn de vier hoektorentjes rond de spits. Opmerkelijk is de ouderdom van de gemeente: Herne wordt voor het eerst als ‘Herinium’ genoemd in 844 en betekent wellicht ‘nederzetting bij de steen’.
