Een aandachtige wandelaar zal zeker de bisschopsstaf op de kerktoren van Wulvergem bemerken. Deze staf is het symbool van de kerkpatroon St.-Machutus, een heilige die in de 6de eeuw vanuit Ierland naar het vasteland kwam. De legende vertelt dat Machutus, de beschermheilige van Wulvergem, met zijn metgezellen onderweg op een eiland halt hield om er de mis op te dragen. Na de mis bemerkten ze dat ze op de rug van een walvis geland waren. Deze walvis ligt in al zijn glorie, in steen vereeuwigd door Willem Vermander bij het dorpsonthaalpunt van Wulvergem.
