Het eiland El Hierro of Ferro is een schoolvoorbeeld van duurzame energie. Hun geïsoleerde locatie dwong hen hard na te denken over onafhankelijkheid van derden. Ze gingen als één van de eerste grotere gebieden op aarde voor 100% hernieuwbare energie. Belangrijkste onderdeel van dit project is een windkrachtcentrale, waar ook een ontziltingsinstallatie op draait. Ze bouwden op grote hoogte een waterreservoir. Bij windstil weer laten ze water naar beneden lopen om energie op te wekken. Zo kunnen ze 4 dagen zonder wind. Dit proiect werd prachtig toegelicht in de uitstekende reeks #Tegenlicht van de VPRO.
