In juli 1896 voerde een in Metz gestationeerde Duitse compagnie manoeuvres uit en bouwde een houten brug. Beeldhouwers kerfden een gedenkplaat in de zandsteen om hun overlijden vast te leggen. Ze groeven ook een "kamer" in een nabijgelegen rots. Hadden ze zich kunnen voorstellen dat tijdens de oorlog van 1939/45 Russische soldaten, krijgsgevangenen in Ban Saint-Jean, zouden ontsnappen en hun toevlucht zouden zoeken in deze "grot"? De inwoners van het gebied brachten hen voedsel uit solidariteit.
