Karyes-Arahova

Karyes had de beroemde tempel van Artemis, de godin van de jacht. De stad koos de kant van Perzië tijdens de oorlog tussen Griekenland en Perzië in de 5e eeuw voor Christus. Na de overwinning op Perzië in Marathon namen de Grieken wraak op Karyes. Ze doodden alle mannen en verkochten de vrouwen als slaven. Later gebruikten Griekse architecten de vrouwen van Karyes als decoratieve dragers die de slavernij symboliseerden. Sinds de 4e eeuw voor Christus waren dit namen Kariatiden. Het bekendste voorbeeld is het Erechtheion op de Akropolis van Athene.
