Het boek Zorba de Griek van Nikos Kazantzakis speelt zich af op het Griekse eiland Kreta. Zowel de roman als de beroemde filmadaptatie uit 1964 zijn gesitueerd op dit eiland, waar de hoofdpersoon Basil een kolenmijn wil exploiteren en daarbij de hulp krijgt van Alexis Zorba.
De filmopnames vonden ook daadwerkelijk plaats op Kreta, onder andere in het dorp Kokkino Chorio en op het strand van Stavros aan de noordkust van het schiereiland Akrotiri.
