Het ontoegankelijke en onherbergzame landschap van Mani leidde tot het ontstaan van torens in verschillende delen ervan. Het doel van de torens was om het vermogen en de leden van elke familie te beschermen. Sterker nog, in Outside #Mani ontmoeten we ommuurde kapiteinsgroepen waar ze de kapitein en zijn familieleden ontvangen. Dit waren bijeenkomsten, beproevingen, vieringen en andere sociale bijeenkomsten van de hulpsheriff. Grote woongebieden, kerken en krijgers waren beschikbaar om defensieve redenen. Torens en gebouwen begonnen geleidelijk te verschijnen in de 18e eeuw, toen de Ottomaanse heerschappij hard was. Velen van hen speelden een beslissende rol in de Griekse Revolutie.
