Wie zijn de Ladins? Een Nederlands woord voor de bewoners van Ladinië bestaat niet, maar zijzelf noemen zich Ladins: 30.000 bewoners van vijf dalen die als de armen van een zeester uitstralen van het Sellaplateau. Hun taal vormt met het Rhetoromaans in Zwitserland en het Friulisch in Noordoost-Italië het laatste restje van het ooit in de hele Alpen gesproken Kelto-Romeins. De Ladinische cultuur kent veel legenden, waarin de vrouw meestal beslist. Als toch een keer de man het voor het zeggen heeft, volgt rampspoed.
