Op 1 november 1570 wordt de Nederlandse en Vlaamse kust geteisterd door een enorme watersnoodramp die gekend staat als de Allerheiligenvloed. Tal van steden werden getroffen zoals Egmond, Bergen op Zoom en Saeftinghe. Maar sommige dorpen werden zelfs volledig overspoeld en worden de verdronken dorpen genoemd (Avenkerke op het eiland Wulpen, Cornsant op het eiland Bosch in de Waddenzee, Klaaskinderkerke op Schouwen-Duiveland, Koezand in de monding van de Westerschelde, Moggershil ten westen van Tholen, Westende op het eiland Wulpen).
