Het ten noordoosten van Makkum, ten westen van Schraard, ten zuidoosten van Witmarsum en ten zuidwesten van Zurich, iets ten oosten van de plek waar de Afsluitdijk de Friese kust bereikt.De dorpskern ligt ten zuiden van de A7 aan de Gooiumervaart. In 2021 telde het dorp 285 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen De Weeren , Doniawier, Gooium en Hayum. Oorspronkelijk hoorde de buurtschap Hiddum ook tot Wons.
