De Hortus Botanicus is een van de oudste botanische tuinen ter wereld (1682), oorspronkelijk bedoeld als medicinale kruidentuin.
In het Hugo de Vries-laboratorium (1912) van architect Joan van der Meij zijn onder meer in het decoratieve metselwerk al enige elementen van de Amsterdamse Schoolstijl herkenbaar.
Op de Plantage Parklaan woonde op nummer 9 de erfelijkheidsgeleerde Hugo de Vries. Hij kreeg zijn eigen toegangspoortje recht tegenover zijn woonhuis. Via dat toegangspoortje heb je direct zicht op de Gunnera (een plant met mammoetbladeren met een doorsnede van wel 2.50 meter).
Iets verder ligt de prachtige Palmenkas, die speciaal gebouwd werd om Hugo de Vries te eren.
