Het kasteel stamt van origine uit de dertiende eeuw. Het eerste kasteel werd in de zestiende eeuw verwoest en in 1594 herbouwd. In 1634 viel het destijds onbewoonde huis ten prooi aan een bende avonturiers o.l.v. Theodoor Cauwenberg, die de streek onveilig maakten. Troepen uit Luik en Aken belegerden daarop het kasteel en ontmantelden het. In 1833 werden de restanten tot een plateau afgekapt, waarop men het huidige kasteel bouwde. In 1880 werd het kasteel uitgebreid.
