Het Drents-Friese Wold is een nationaal park omdat de staat de nationale betekenis ervan erkent en de bescherming waarborgt. Het Drents-Friese Wold is één van de grootste natuurgebieden van Nederland met ruim 6.000 hectare bos, heide, stuifzand, graslanden, beekdalen, venen en vennen.
Het karakter van het Drents-Friese Wold is in belangrijke mate beïnvloed door de potstalcultuur. Grote delen, zoals het Aekingerzand bij Appelscha (in de volksmond ook wel de 'Kale Duinen' genoemd), werden eeuwenlang door de boeren uit de omliggende dorpen gebruikt voor het begrazen door schapen. Op de heide gestoken plaggen werden als strooisel in de stallen gelegd en zo met dierlijke uitwerpselen tot compost vermengd die tenslotte jaarlijks naar de akker op de es werd gebracht ter bemesting. Door deze eeuwenlange begrazing en het afsteken van plaggen voor de potstalcultuur, verschraalden grote delen van de zure zandgrond. Op die plaatsen ontstonden heidevelden en soms stuifzand.
De zandvlakten en heidevelden ('woeste gronden') werden steeds meer bebost en zo ontstond het Drents-Friese Wold.
