Op weg van Heerlen naar Ubachsberg is de Putberg de eerste helling die de rijders van de Rode en Lichtrode Lus in 2026 op hun route tegenkomen. De helling is een dikke twee kilometer lang. Maximaal is de stijging 6,1%, gemiddeld 3,4%. Kort geleden is de helling voorzien van een breed fietspad aan de rechterzijde, waar zowel de klimmers als de dalers gebruik van maken. Halverwege ligt een oude kalkoven, een uit Kundersteen opgetrokken industrieel monument dat op dit moment wordt gerestaureerd.
