British Museum

In 1817, the famous scientist and discoverer Alexander von Humboldt stayed with his brother Wilhelm in Portland Place, not far from the British Museum. He also went to admire the Elgin Marbles which were "imported" in that year from occupied Greece by the Turks. The Elgin Marbles are still a very sensitive issue in the relationship between the UK and Greece. These Elgin Marbles are a collection of marble sculptures "collected" by the Earl of Elgin from the Greek Acropolis. Wilhelm, the brother of Alexander von Humboldt would have said to his wife: "What a fantastic sculptures, but what a robbery".
