I 1817 boede den berømte videnskabsmand og opdagelsesrejsende Alexander von Humboldt sammen med sin bror Wilhelm i Portland Place, ikke langt fra British Museum. Han tog også hen for at beundre Elgin Marmorene, som blev "importeret" det år fra det besatte Grækenland af tyrkerne. Elgin Marmorene er stadig et meget følsomt emne i forholdet mellem UK og Grækenland. Disse Elgin Marmer er en samling af marmorskulpturer "indsamlet" af jarl af Elgin fra den græske Akropolis. Wilhelm, broren til Alexander von Humboldt, skulle have sagt til sin kone: "Hvilke fantastiske skulpturer, men hvilken røveri".
