Nel 1817, il famoso scienziato e scopritore Alexander von Humboldt soggiornò con suo fratello Wilhelm in Portland Place, non lontano dal British Museum. Andò anche a ammirare i Marmi di Elgin che furono "importati" quell'anno dalla Grecia occupata dai turchi. I Marmi di Elgin sono ancora un argomento molto delicato nei rapporti tra Regno Unito e Grecia. Questi Marmi di Elgin sono una collezione di sculture in marmo "raccolte" dal conte di Elgin dall'Acropoli greca. Wilhelm, il fratello di Alexander von Humboldt, avrebbe detto a sua moglie: "Che sculture fantastiche, ma che furto".
