Le canal vers Beverlo a été construit en un temps record de 3 ans. Les travaux de creusement ont commencé en 1854. Il sert de dérivation du canal Bocholt-Herentals et a été principalement creusé pour des raisons militaires. C'était un canal d'approvisionnement pour la garnison de Leopoldsburg. Plus tard, il est devenu également commercialement important pour l'industrie métallurgique à Lommel.
Le canal se termine dans le port de Leopoldsburg et est exempt d'écluses.
