From late antiquity, the Kastro was fortified to protect against pirates and invaders. The current village structure follows the principle of a compact settlement, with houses connected together as a natural defensive wall. Small windows, high doorways, and a lack of street openings emphasize the village's defensive character. In the Middle Ages, the Kastro became the center of power on Sifnos, with the remains of the ruler's residence and several historic churches as landmarks.
