Esteso su 105 ettari (di cui 17 sono occupati dal lago), il parco fu creato nel 1856 dai Fratelli Denis e Eugène Buhler, architetti paesaggisti di Parigi, e aperto a partire dal 1857. È il più grande parco cittadino in Francia.
