Jernstangen blev opført af den belgiske hær i 1851. Denne stang var et referencepunkt for nøjagtige afstands- og højdemålinger. Stangen er et geodetisk signal, der er en del af et geodetisk trianguleringsnet. De to andre geodetiske baser befandt sig i Oostende og Hampiré.
Da dette område stadig var et stort hedelandskab, gjorde de vidtstrakte udsigter det muligt at foretage præcise målinger til kirketårne og andre pejlemærker i området.
