Le chiuse Principe Beatrice
Nel 1931 fu ordinata la costruzione di un nuovo canale da Amsterdam a Tiel, il Canale Amsterdam-Reno. All'altezza di Jutphaas si diramava un tratto verso il Lek a est di Vreeswijk con due chiuse affiancate dotate di porte a sollevamento. Il 23 marzo 1938 questa nuova chiusa fu ufficialmente inaugurata. Questo portò a Vreeswijk un drammatico crollo della prosperità. La navigazione ora passava oltre il villaggio. I negozianti e i commercianti rimasero senza lavoro e lasciarono il villaggio. Si fece di tutto per creare un nuovo 'centro commerciale' vicino alla nuova chiusa, dove in un vicino futuro sarebbe sorto il complesso industriale Het Klooster, ma il piano non ebbe successo. Rijkswaterstaat rifiutò tutte le richieste di permessi.
