NH CHURCH Steenbergen

The church of the Protestant (Dutch Reformed) community in Steenbergen, better known as the Witte Kerk or Protestant Church, is a church building, a so-called water management church.

Waterstaatskerk is the name for Dutch church buildings that were built between 1824 and 1875 with financial support from the national government. The design and construction of such churches was subject to the approval and control of engineers of the Ministry of Water Management. Contrary to popular belief, the concept of Waterstaatskerk is not linked to a particular architectural style.

The White Church, with its Tuscan half-columns, cornice and triangular pediment, as well as the bell tower with its hexagonal obelisks, is a textbook example of neoclassicism.
