Der Fluss entspringt in der Gemeinde Büllingen, in der Ortschaft Honsfeld, auf 640m über dem Meeresspiegel. Das Becken befindet sich in den Hohen Ardennen. Baraque Michel ist mit 674 Metern einer der höchsten Punkte Belgiens und bildet einen Teil des Wasserscheidegebiets des Amblève-Beckens. Die Mündung der Amblève bei Comblain-au-Pont hingegen liegt nur 120 Meter hoch. Daher hat die Amblève einen sehr hohen Gefälle.
Das Tal der Amblève ist vor allem sehr schmal. In der Nähe von Fond de Quareux ist das Tal am schmalsten, während das Tal in der Nähe des Dorfes Cheneux relativ breit ist. Das Tal ist eines der schönsten Gebiete in den Hohen Ardennen.
