The square in front of the Ixelles town hall, which was redesigned in 2019, is a feast for the eyes, which is exactly what is needed in this busy neighbourhood. The square provides play areas, trees, flowers, fountains and café terraces. The mayor keeps an eye on things from the former Malibran castle. This castle was a country house for violinist Charles-Auguste de Bériot and was built in 1833. He settled there with his girlfriend Maria Garcia Malibran, a famous singer. After Maria's death in 1836, the castle was bought by the municipality of Ixelles in 1849, and turned into the town hall.
