Hawthorn hedge with two medlar trees grafted onto a rootstock of hawthorn. Since the grafting was done at a height of 180 cm, the crowns of the medlar trees, with a diameter of about five meters, rise above the trimming hedge.
This concerns a cultural variety of medlar that was kept for its large fruits. By including the medlar trees in the hedge, which enclosed a former orchard, the usefulness of the hedge as a barrier was increased by adding a yield of fruits. Medlar was harvested after the first frost, which made the flesh soft and edible.
