Since the early 50s in full Cold War this was military domain. The towers were part of a network to detect a possible Soviet attack. The military domain was guarded by conscripts for years until it closed in 2005.
In 1985, the old metal tower was demolished and a concrete structure of almost 70 meters high was erected that has defined the skyline of the small village of Ossel for years. The radar tower was bought by Godfried Jacobs in 2016 and will not be demolished. The silent witness of the Cold War will be secured and will soon also be accessible, albeit by appointment and under supervision. Schoolchildren could take a look at it from 2021.
