PLACE CHEVERT

Previously named Sainte-Croix, this square has been called Chevert since 1837. François de Chevert (1695-1769), represented here in full-length, became Marshal of France in 1744. The square is decorated with a bronze medallion located at the intersection of the Legay bridge and the quai de la République. It commemorates the heroic act of the Franc Tireur Partisan Fernand Legay. On August 30, 1944, when the American army was at the gates of the city, he succeeded in defusing a German bomb placed under the bridge adjacent to the square, the only bridge that could be used by armored vehicles. A marker on the Voie de la Liberté (Liberty Way) recalls the passage of General Patton's army on the same day. Verdun was officially liberated on August 31, 1944.
