On both sides of the Aa are the remains of the 'Dam of Mendoza'. This object, a dam between the two sand ridges, has nothing to do with a general of that name, but dates from 1700. It was built out of fear of an attack by the French from the south. By damming the stream Aa or Weerijs', which flows in the direction of Breda, a reservoir was created. When the enemy was approaching, the dam was removed. For example, the area around the city was flooded: a perfect means of defence.
