Aunque Aywaille no es grande, hay más de ocho mil personas viviendo allí, y por lo tanto cumple una función central para la región. También es un importante nudo de carreteras: Aywaille a veces se conoce como la puerta de las Ardenas de Lieja. Cerca de allí, austriacos y franceses libraron una de sus batallas en 1794 en la altura de Sur La Reid o Heid des Gattes, que ahora es una reserva natural.
