The St. Peter's Abbey already owned a set of ten bells from the Leenknecht in the 15th century. According to the list of the brothers of Halle, the abbey could pride itself in 1658 on a significant carillon weighing 34,544 pounds. The caster of this carillon is unknown. The carillon was played by monks from the abbey. In the 18th century, there seemed to be a change. Jan Thibaut, carillonneur of St. Bavo's Cathedral, became the carillonneur of St. Peter's Abbey in 1761. In 1771 he was succeeded by the organist Latour. F. J. A. Mertyn, who was also an organist, served as the carillonneur of the abbey until 1797. Then the tower was emptied by the republicans. This marked the definitive end of the abbey carillon.
