Descrizione dall'autore

The route begins at the hiking car park in the Angerbachtal near the village of Hösel. This is a busy car park, so in good weather on sunny and holiday days, it can quickly fill up.
You follow the route in a clockwise direction.

You immediately begin with a climb from the Angerbachtal up to Hösel. After that, you descend to the Panorama Radweg Niederbergbahn, a paved cycle path along a former railway bed. You follow the cycle path slightly uphill. At Heiligenhaus, you turn off (left) and follow a few kilometers of cycle path along the main road. Then it becomes quiet again, and you descend into the valley of the Oefterbach (Note: in the forest-protected area, the road is in poorer condition). And then you climb directly out of the valley (the Gellenberg).

Then you go down to the Hesperbach, to the district of Fischlaken, and then to the Baldeneysee, a reservoir in the Ruhr area. Along the southern bank, you go over the wide combined foot-and-cycle path. Please note that it can be crowded here in good weather with hikers, skaters, cyclists, and bikers. Then you climb out of the Ruhr valley, with a small 13% gradient in between and a left curve from a main road (watch out!). Over quiet roads and a gradual rise and fall, you reach Essen-Kupferdreh. You only bike through this Essen district briefly and climb on a quiet road to Wilhelmshöhe. Here you leave the Niederbergisches Land and enter the hilly countryside of the Elfringhauser Schweiz (or Hattinger Hügelland).

The descent from Wilhelmshöhe takes place on a somewhat busier road, but with excellent asphalt and smooth curves. The descent leads you into the busy Nierenhof, but after hundreds of meters, you leave the main roads and climb towards Hattingen. The descent to Hattingen goes up to 18%, and the road surface is partly only moderate. In Hattingen, you finally turn sharply right to climb away from the town. A tip though: Turn left just past the traffic light intersection and walk to the beautiful center of Hattingen: There are many half-timbered houses, making it (43 km away) also an ideal place to take a break.

The climb away from Hattingen is not too steep and runs partly on a road that is car-free on sunny and holiday days. The descent takes you into a beautiful, hilly part of the Hattinger Hügelland, with many roads closed to through traffic. This often means steep climbs on narrow roads that are sometimes in somewhat poor condition (but on this route, that’s not too bad for the descents). High speeds can sometimes not be achieved during descents due to the road surface, the winding nature of the roads, and the narrow streets.

Finally, you arrive in the town of Neviges and are back in the Niederbergisches Land. The passage through Neviges is also short: You climb past the sports park on a steep road (up to 17%) on a road partially closed to car traffic, and after following a piece of the Panorama Radweg Niederbergbahn, you descend steeply alongside the limestone quarry of Wülfrath. Then you follow a few kilometers of cycle path along the main road and come into the quiet and beautiful Angerbachtal. Note that the roads in this valley are narrow, and you may still have to contend with oncoming traffic. You will encounter two more climbs away from the Angerbachtal, with the last descent to the hiking car park, where you need to be careful of a series of cross ditches in the road surface (so don’t descend too quickly!).

You will likely come to the conclusion: Despite the perhaps relatively short distance, this ride was tough due to the considerable relief.
