Piccadilly Circus is the centerpiece of the capital and once the navel of the Empire. Amid the busy traffic around the square, many visitors like to relax on the steps of the Eros fountain. In 1893, Alfred Gilbert built this monument in honor of the philanthropist Anthony Ashley Cooper, the seventh Earl of Shaftesbury. This nobleman fought against massive poverty in the 19th century with his own capital by establishing soup kitchens and building schools. The winged angel with a bow and arrow atop the fountain is therefore clearly not a representation of the god of love but rather an allegory of the deceased Earl of Shaftesbury (shaft = arrow, bury = buried).
