A long history of long bridges
A bridge has been in this place for centuries, but it has been broken down twice during wartime to repel the enemy.
The first (wooden) bridge was built in 1572. A little three-quarters of a century later, the wooden bridge was rebuilt; during the period without a bridge, the innkeeper of the Rechthuis also served as a ferryman.
The next wooden bridge lasted less than forty years, as it was demolished in 1672 under the command of William III to stop the French.
The next bridge was severely damaged by a city fire in 1781. Two more bridges followed after that.
The current stone bridge, Princess Irene Bridge, is from 1939.
