Der 1898 aufgestellte Brunnen wird von einer Bronzestatue von Auguste Bartholdi gekrönt, die Lazarus von Schwendi (1522-1583) darstellt. Der Brunnen wurde 1940 abgerissen und nach dem Krieg mit einem kleineren und anders ausgerichteten Becken wieder aufgebaut, um die Statue auf dem Place de l'Ancienne Douane erneut zu beherbergen
Lazarus von Schwendi war zwischen 1564 und 1568 Kriegsherr im Dienste von Kaiser Maximilian II. und zog nach Ungarn, um gegen die Türken zu kämpfen, von wo er angeblich die Tokajer-Rebsorte mitbrachte. Auguste Bartholdi ließ sich von dieser Legende inspirieren und ließ seine Schwendi-Statue eine Weinrebe schwingen.
