Machelen fue mencionado por primera vez en 697 , 820 y 830 en los anales de la Abadía de San Pedro en Gante. Se le conocía, entre otras cosas, como Machlinio, que significaba poderoso.
El centro del pueblo con la iglesia surgió cerca de Leie, en una eminencia en la curva exterior derecha, llamada "Machelen-put".
Está situado en un lugar pintoresco en un brazo no utilizado del río Leie. Ese pozo estaba casi lleno . Esto pudo evitarse, en parte gracias a Roger Raveel , un artista nacido y criado en Machelen. Desde 1999, el pintor tiene su propio museo en su pueblo natal.
Cada año, el sábado del primer fin de semana de septiembre, se lleva a cabo un baile en la bañera en Machelen Put.
