Die Universität Straßburg ist die Universität der Stadt Straßburg im Elsass. Sie ging aus einem lutherischen Gymnasium hervor, das 1538 gegründet wurde. Das Elsass und die Stadt Straßburg gehörten damals zum Heiligen Römischen Reich. Im Jahr 1566 wurde das Gymnasium in eine Akademie umgewandelt und diese erhielt 1621 den Status einer Volluniversität.
Bis zur Französischen Revolution 1789 war die Universität trotz französischer Herrschaft ab 1681 im Wesentlichen eine deutsch geprägte Hochschule. Danach wurde sie in das französische Hochschulsystem integriert. Nach dem Deutsch-Französischen Krieg 1870/71 kam sie mit dem Elsass zurück unter deutsche Herrschaft, wurde als Kaiser-Wilhelm-Universität 1872 neu gegründet und erlebte in den folgenden Jahrzehnten einen erheblichen Ausbau.
