Der Brennerpass trennt Österreich von Italien. Mit 1.372 m über dem Meeresspiegel ist es der niedrigste und meist frequentierte Durchgang zwischen dem Norden und Süden der Alpen und der einzige, der durch eine Freiluftbahn führt. Es wird auch von der Europastraße 45 über die am 17. November 1963 in Österreich eröffnete mautpflichtige Autobahn A13 und die Autobahn A22 in Italien überquert.
Der Bau der Autobahn begann im Jahr 1957 und bei dieser Gelegenheit wurde die Europabrücke gebaut, die bis 1974 mit 190 m die höchste Brücke Europas war.
