Hallerbos

A large part of the Hallerbos consists of beautiful beech trees. But most of the trees are not that old because of the turbulent history of the forest. During the First World War, the German occupying forces had almost all the large trees cut down and the forest was almost destroyed. This includes wood in the trenches. After the war, the domain was placed under sequestration and in 1930 it came into the possession of the Belgian State, as war compensation. Finally, the forest was reforested between the 1930s and 1950s, which explains its relatively youthful aspect. As a result, old thick trees are scarce throughout the Hallerbos, but locally there are a number of trees outside Jansheideberg that have survived the war felling, with
a concentration of old trees around the hunting pavilion.
