Cagliari est la capitale de l'île de Sardaigne, région autonome d'Italie. Le nom sarde de Cagliari, Casteddu, signifie « château ». La commune compte environ 154 400 habitants en 2016, et on en compte plus de 430 000 dans l'ensemble de sa ville métropolitaine, qui comprend Elmas, Assemini, Capoterra, Selargius, Sestu, Monserrato, Quartucciu, Quartu Sant'Elena et huit autres communes.
