Filippi è un'antica città della Macedonia e non distante dal mare Egeo, facente parte attualmente del comune di Kavala .

Sorge sul sito dell'antica Crenides e prese il nome dal re Filippo II di Macedonia, che la fece ingrandire e fortificare nel 356 a.C. per farne un centro minerario. Fu conquistata dai Romani nel 168 a.C..
Nell'ottobre del 42 a.C. fu teatro della famosa battaglia di Filippi, decisiva tra le truppe di Ottaviano e Antonio contro quelle degli uccisori di Giulio Cesare, Bruto e Cassio, che furono sconfitti; Ottaviano, divenuto successivamente Augusto, la elevò al rango di colonia.
